Tornado Relief Collection Efforts Underway at Community Harvest Food Bank
This past Friday’s tornado outbreak had a devastating impact across six states – Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. With multiple fatalities and extensive property damage, families are facing the loss of loved ones and the very homes they live in. In addition to that loss, many lack access to necessities as relief and rescue efforts get underway. Two food banks in the Feeding America network currently have a great need for supplemental support – Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Community Harvest Food Bank will be collecting donations of bottled water, personal care items, and ready-to-eat food items, including cans with pop tops to provide for basic needs for these hard-hit areas. Our hearts go out to those affected by this disaster, and as a responder, our community has a way to directly help those families in need.
Please bring donations to Community Harvest Food Bank at 999 East Tillman Road in Fort Wayne during regular business hours M-F, 7:30AM to 4:00PM. (The food bank will close at 11:30AM on Wednesday, December 23rd for the Christmas holiday weekend.)
Families receiving food will need cans and packages that can be eaten right away without cooking or can openers (if food prep items are unavailable). This includes peanut butter, canned items with pop tops, such as ravioli, soups, fruits and vegetables, tear-open bags of chicken or tuna, SPAM, baked beans, etc.
Personal care and cleaning donations should include items like paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, deodorant, bleach, feminine products, diapers, washcloths, toothpaste and brushes, lotions and ointments, wet wipes, brushes, combs, and other grooming items.
We are also requesting donations of water, either gallons or bottled, that can be given to families for drinking.
