Fight Hunger. Spark Change. Meet Laura
“I add water so the soup lasts longer. Usually, I can get about three meals out of it before the can is gone.”
It is hard to imagine that someone out there is stretching one can of soup over three meals. But it happens all the time. Laura, a senior citizen living on Social Security benefits, has a lot of bills to pay before she can buy food each month. And that means she has to make some tough tradeoffs, like watering down her food.
“At least my blood sugar stays low,” she joked. “But it’s hard being so hungry.”
Since joining the SeniorPak program at Community Harvest Food Bank, Laura gets groceries twice a month. In addition to what she is able to buy at home, her bags include things like vegetables, fruits, protein, boxed meals, healthy snacks, and even fresh produce, dairy, and sandwich bread.
And, of course, each bag is packed with soups that won’t need to be watered down.
“It seems like such a luxury to have a whole can of soup in one meal!” She laughs and peeks into her bag to see what she’s receiving this week. “I just can’t tell you enough what a blessing this is.”
During this upcoming month, you can help people like Laura by participating in the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” through May 20th at your local Walmart store. It’s as simple as purchasing specially marked products while doing your normal grocery shopping, or making a donation at the register.
For its 6th annual campaign, Walmart, Feeding America, and 18 participating suppliers are partnering to combat hunger in Fort Wayne and throughout the United States. In the past five years 749 million meals have been raised for food banks just like Community Harvest.
In turn, the funding is used to get needed meals to clients like Laura.
