Community Harvest Purchases COVID-19 Essentials, Thanks to Feeding America and Jeff Bezos
Thanks to a $449,777 grant, Community Harvest was able to meet the needs of the community during the COVID-19 crisis. The funding allowed the food bank to purchase much-needed food storage and transportation, including a truck, refrigerated trailers, staffing expenses, and more than $180,000 in food purchases.
“During these times of uncertainty, we want to meet the current community needs as best we can, while also preparing for what might come,” said Carmen Cumberland, Executive President of Community Harvest. “This gift from Jeff Bezos brought to us by Feeding America has been a truly incredible opportunity to care for the needs of the community both now, and during the continuing COVID-19 crisis.”
The funding has provided refrigerated trailer storage, which allows the food bank to store additional donated and purchased food items, as it has seen triple the demand for programs such as Farm Wagon and Saturday Helping Hands.
“If we have an opportunity to accept food, we are now better equipped to take it,” said Cumberland. “So many families who had food on their tables only weeks ago are coming for help today. This gift of food and equipment gives us the ability to meet the needs of everyone who is facing a crisis and food insecurity for a long time to come.”
