Legacy Planned Giving
Leaving a Legacy
Food is a basic necessity and the gift of a meal is priceless to a child, senior, Veteran, or family in need. By making a planned gift to Community Harvest, you’ll ensure future generations grow up healthy – not hungry.
Your gift becomes even more life changing because financial contributions are able to leverage our networks in the food industry to acquire food at much less than wholesale cost and assist more individuals and families in our service area.
If you choose to set up your donation as an unrestricted bequest to our food bank, it will be used where the need is greatest.
Your Gift, Your Plan, Your Decision
Naming the food bank as a beneficiary is the simplest way to make a planned gift. In addition, it allows you to easily change your plans if circumstances change.
There are many gift plan options for you to choose from, Charitable Remainder Trust, Charitable Lead Trust, Revocable Living Trust. You could also choose gifts of securities, life insurance, or retirement assets.
If you already have an estate plan in place, but would like to consider a legacy gift to help continue to feed the hungry, you can make the change when updating your will or trust.
It is always best to consult an attorney or estate planner for help when deciding which is the best choice for you.
Types of Planned Gifts
Bequests
This most frequently used planned gift is fully tax deductible for estate tax purposes. A bequest is a written statement in your will directing that specific assets or an amount, percentage, or remainder of your estate, be transferred to us upon your death.
Charitable Lead Trusts
A way to pass significant wealth to your heirs at minimal or no transfer tax cost, while making immediate gifts to Community Harvest.
Retirement Plans & IRA Beneficiaries
These can be subject to both income and estate taxes, greatly limiting the amount available for heirs. You can designate Community Harvest as the beneficiary, which allows you to make a sizable gift and qualify for an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction.
Life Insurance Policy Beneficiary
You may donate a new policy or designate Community Harvest as the beneficiary and/or owner of an existing policy. This is an excellent way to make a sizable gift with a minimal outlay of cash.
Life Income Gifts
Charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts offer an immediate income tax deduction and lifetime income payments. If your gift is funded with appreciated securities or real estate, you may also avoid capital gains taxes.
Financial contributions are most impactful as we are able to leverage our networks in the food industry to acquire food at much less than wholesale cost and assist more individuals and families in our service area.
